Case Summary:
Credit card abuse is rampant. If you have suffered credit card rate hike from one month to the next as a result of a late payment or overlimit; if in the past you received a pre-approved offer for an account "Up To $3,000" (or some other amount), but were provided a card with a much smaller credit limit and an annual fee; if you have suffered credit card annual fees that trigger overlimit fees; if your Providian credit card account was transferred to Chase along with a substantial rate increase, then you may wish to talk to a lawyer.

Credit card companies are increasingly offering teaser rates and then dramatically increasing the rates without notice on the basis of a single late payment, or an overlimit, or some other pretense. These unfair practices are driving interest rates out of sight.

Case Detail:
Lawyers working in the area of credit card abuse are actively pursuing credit card companies whose predatory practices involve (1) Unannounced Rate Increases, (2) Unannounced Credit Reductions, (3) Overlimit Fees triggered solely by annual fees, and (4) Pre-approved and other Special Offers that are not honored. Actions can be brought for incidents that occurred several years ago, particularly when the abuses are ongoing.

I have several credit cards that have increased my APR just because they want to in my opinion. There excuse was that it was to help pay it off faster. Also many of them are lowering my credit limit which in turn makes my credit look worse.

I've been paying applied card bank more and more money each month but still fail to make any dent in the balance. Each time a new charge is created, $15 month fee, $35 monthly mainteance fee, $30 annual fee, $35 overlimit fee. And they make it so that I can't see the actual balance until the following month. So I'm not sure how much I need to pay inorder not to exceed excess fees.

Upon receipt of my tax return I made a $1700 payment on a $2500 balance on a credit card. When I made the payment my account was in good standing. Subsequent to receiving my $1700 payment the company reduced by line of credit by approx. $1200 without telling me. As a result I was changed over the limit fees for any balance over the "new" $1100 limit.

My Wife and I both had Providian Finacial credit cards with an annual fee. We had agreed to a 18 % charge and had been paying on time for about 2-3 years and in 2002 Our rates were increased to 26 % and 28 % for the two cards. A letter was sent to Us saying that if We did not agree with this and wished for our APR to remain the same to put it writting,I did so for both cards and to no avail the rate increase continued. I then called Providian and confronted the issue, thier response was based on My recent credit score they were raising the APR, then I was told that I could close the account but the charges would stay and compound.
