Case Summary: First Merit does not allow a person to penalize the bank when, say, their ATM fails to give you money, but it is nonetheless debited from your account. Sure, they will probably give your money back a week later, but is this not an overdraft against the customer? After all, my overdrafts are temporary, and I have to pay them back in addition to a penalty. I also learned that the online recent transactions report page isn't up-to-date. That is, the charges listed may or may be posted to one's account at all. I ask then, what is the purpose of this page? To deceive? I foolishly took a teller's word that it was the most up-to-date record when asking why she was looking at this page as well. She stated yes, it is the most up-to-date. Yes, the deposit I'm about to make will cover an upcoming charge of such-and-such amount. A costly lie. Also, there is some sort of confusing retro-charging that I still don't understand. One doesn't know exactly what the balance is on the transaction page, despite what is clearly written under "available balance". Case Detail: Articles have been written in financial pages of how banks will be benefiting from overdraft charges in this recession economy. This penalty system needs to be abolished, as it hits hardest those who rely on current cash flow for their daily existence. |
